Dematerialisation is the process of converting physical share certificates into an electronic or digital format, making them easier to manage and accessible from anywhere in the world. Investors who want to trade online must open a Demat account with a Depository Participant (DP), which eliminates the need to hold physical certificates and allows seamless tracking of holdings.
Previously, issuing and handling paper share certificates was a slow and complicated process. Dematerialisation has simplified this by speeding up transactions and securely storing securities in digital form. Once your Demat account is active, you can convert your physical shares by submitting the certificates along with a Dematerialisation Request Form (DRF) to your DP. Please ensure that you write “Surrendered for Dematerialisation” on each certificate. After submitting all the Dematerialisation Request Forms (DRF), the Depository Participant will provide an acknowledgement confirming the receipt of your physical certificates.
